Prosecutors have deemed him the mastermind behind the 2016 jailbreak in Santa Ana, and now the man convicted of the escape, Hossein Nayeri, is seeking compensation from Orange County. Nayeri filed a claim this week, requesting $25,000, based on comments made by Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer after the conviction.
Nayeri, 44, was already serving two life sentences without parole for his involvement in a kidnapping-extortion plot that included the sexual mutilation of a marijuana dispensary owner. In March, he was found guilty of the jailbreak. However, Nayeri was acquitted of kidnapping during a carjacking and other related charges.
In his claim against the county, Nayeri accuses Spitzer of acting with malice and ill will by making disparaging remarks about him to the media following the conviction. Spitzer referred to Nayeri as “one of America’s most dangerous criminals” and described him as conniving, manipulative, and a mastermind.
Nayeri argues that Spitzer’s statements were intended to harm and attack him before his sentencing, and he points out that these statements were widely broadcast through various media platforms and search engines.
Spitzer remains firm in his opinion of Nayeri, stating, “He is one of America’s most dangerous criminals. He’s conniving, manipulative, and a mastermind. He is a convicted jail escapee sentenced to life without parole for committing crimes of extreme violence.”
Nayeri describes Spitzer’s remarks as a frantic attempt to save face and dismisses the use of multiple vehicles and a helicopter to transport him to prison as a waste of taxpayer money.
According to Nayeri, this extravagant transportation was a display of power and a message sent by elected officials within Orange County local government. He believes it was an abuse of authority and a shameful misuse of taxpayer funds.
Nayeri further criticizes the allocation of funds towards his transportation, arguing that the money could have been better spent on local charities. In response, Spitzer dismisses Nayeri’s outrage, reminding him of the taxpayer dollars wasted during the search for him following the jailbreak. Spitzer believes the investment made to keep Nayeri behind bars is worthwhile.
“Nayeri couldn’t care less about the taxpayer dollars spent on searching for him, but now he’s upset because those same funds were used to secure his transportation to state prison. The money spent to ensure Nayeri remains incarcerated is justified,” said Spitzer.
Ultimately, Nayeri’s claim seeks compensation for the alleged harm caused by Spitzer’s remarks and questions the use of taxpayer money throughout his case.
Spitzer, on the other hand, maintains his stance and believes that the attention given to Nayeri’s escape, conviction, and transport to prison is warranted.
