NatWest expresses regret to homeowner for oversized Marcus Rashford mural

NatWest has issued an apology following a controversial incident involving the painting of a large mural of Marcus Rashford on the side of a residence without obtaining the owner’s consent. The bank had commissioned an artist to create the artwork as part of its financial skills program for young people. However, in addition to Rashford’s portrayal, the mural prominently featured NatWest’s logo on a wall connected to the house. A slogan, “Believe it, become it,” was also included.

The problem arose when it was discovered that the portion of the property where the mural was painted belonged to Peter Brynin, the landlord and former antiques dealer. Brynin expressed his dissatisfaction, stating that while he had no objections to graffiti and murals, he did not appreciate his wall being used as an advertising medium without consent.

NatWest acknowledged the error, citing a lack of awareness regarding the ownership of the wall. The bank had purchased the space in good faith from a third party for their financial skills campaign.

Located on Trafalgar Lane in Brighton, the property in question is renowned for being a local graffiti hotspot. Prior to the mural, the wall was adorned with a painting of a dragon.

Brynin expressed his surprise, saying, “It is an art wall. It’s known for that… I have no objection to Rashford, I have no objection to the art, but I do object to an advert where I haven’t been contacted at all.” He further drew a comparison, stating that he would not be allowed to paint his business logo on the side of the bank’s building, as it would be considered “criminal damage.”

Marcus Rashford gained prominence during the pandemic for his advocacy in securing holiday food vouchers for children who relied on free school meals during national lockdowns. A black-and-white mural of Rashford, created by artist Akse P19 in Manchester in 2020, garnered widespread acclaim and went viral online.
