National survey indicates that a growing number of Canadians are facing difficulties in covering their monthly expenses

According to a recent poll conducted by Leger, it appears that almost half of the Canadian population is struggling to make ends meet, as the cost of living crisis continues to impact households. It is particularly concerning that young people are more likely to report poor financial conditions. Interestingly, the poll also suggests that the Conservatives are gaining popularity, focusing on the issue of affordability, with 38 percent of respondents indicating that they would vote for the party in an upcoming election. On the other hand, support for the Liberals, who have recently addressed the housing crisis during a cabinet retreat, appears to be slipping.

The Leger poll reveals that 47 percent of respondents claim to live paycheck to paycheck, with this number increasing to 53 percent for those aged between 18 and 35, and 57 percent for individuals between 35 and 54 years old. It is worth noting that Atlantic Canada, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan seem to be the regions most affected by high prices, as more than half of the respondents from these areas reported struggling financially. In comparison, 38 percent of Quebecers and 42 percent of British Columbians stated that they were just managing to get by on each paycheck.

When asked about the state of their household finances, 60 percent of respondents described them as good or very good, while 36 percent expressed that their financial situation was poor or very poor. The remaining 4 percent were unsure about their financial state.

Interestingly, individuals aged 55 and above were more likely to report favorable financial conditions compared to younger age groups. Additionally, the survey data indicates that men are more optimistic about their financial standing than women. Concerns about job security were also prevalent, with nearly half (47 percent) of respondents under the age of 35 expressing worries about losing their jobs in the next year, compared to 35 percent of individuals between the ages of 35 and 54. Worries about job security were highest in Ontario and lowest in Quebec.

The poll further reveals that younger individuals are more likely to believe that Canada is currently experiencing an economic recession. Approximately 61 percent of respondents answered yes to this question, while 16 percent were uncertain and 23 percent disagreed.

The survey, which was conducted by Leger and involved 1,597 Canadians, cannot be assigned a margin of error as online surveys are not considered fully random samples. Nevertheless, it does suggest that the Conservative party’s support is at 38 percent, a three percentage point increase from the previous poll in late July. This trend of rising support for the Conservatives has been observed since late May, when the party was at 31 percent, and puts their current support four points higher than during the last federal election in 2021. Meanwhile, the Liberal party’s support among decided voters remains nine points behind the Conservatives at 29 percent, the same as in July, and the NDP is the top choice for 18 percent of those surveyed. However, support for the New Democrats has decreased by two points since July.

Despite these shifting political dynamics, 34 percent of those polled express either very satisfied or somewhat satisfied with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government. On the other hand, 24 percent indicate some level of dissatisfaction, while 35 percent express very dissatisfaction. It is noteworthy that only 35 percent of women polled reported being satisfied with the government, compared to 57 percent who expressed dissatisfaction.
