National supply shortage leads to potential scarcity of Ozempic in Canada

A scarcity of the diabetes drug Ozempic, which is used off-label for weight loss, is predicted in Canada, according to the manufacturer’s statement on Friday.

Novo Nordisk has reported a temporary supply disruption with its one-milligram injection pen for Ozempic.

This shortage is a result of global supply constraints and an increase in demand for the drug.

Health Canada has stated that intermittent shortages are anticipated from late August to early October.

Both Health Canada and Novo Nordisk have confirmed that the 0.25 mg and 0.5 mg doses of Ozempic are still available for patients with Type 2 diabetes.

Pharmacists are encouraged to limit refill prescriptions to a 30-day supply.

More information will be provided.
