It’s no secret that Taylor Swift’s music has the power to make her fans dance and jump around. But when over 72,000 Swifties come together, the result is a seismic event.
Last weekend, during Swift’s two-night performance at Lumen Field in Seattle, the seismic activity caused by the fans jumping and dancing was equivalent to a 2.3-magnitude earthquake, according to seismologist Jackie Caplan-Auerbach.
The Seattle Times reported that the seismic activity occurred throughout the entirety of the three-and-a-half-hour concert, with the largest tremors happening during Swift’s performances of “Shake It Off” and “Blank Space” – two fan favorites known for getting the crowd moving.
Caplan-Auerbach has dubbed this event the “Swift Quake,” likening it to the well-known “Beast Quake” of 2011 when Seattle Seahawks fans caused seismic activity while celebrating a touchdown.
The Swift Quake was even more powerful than the Beast Quake, with a 0.3 increase in magnitude.
Swift’s concerts were sold out, with over 72,000 concertgoers in attendance. This broke the previous attendance record set by U2 in 2011. Swift is also the first artist to sell out Lumen Field on consecutive nights.
Caplan-Auerbach gathered the data from a seismometer located next to Lumen Field, and the timing of the tremors correlated with Swift’s set list. Although the Sunday concert had a delayed start, the seismic activity was similar to the previous night.
After the shows, Swift expressed her gratitude to her fans on Instagram for their energy and enthusiasm.
It’s unclear exactly what caused the seismic activity, whether it was the soundwaves from the music, the fans’ movements, or a combination of factors.
Caplan-Auerbach and her colleagues are asking Swifties who attended the concerts to share videos and timestamps for a more comprehensive understanding of the event.
The team continues to research the relationship between concerts and tremors and is particularly excited about Beyoncé’s upcoming visit to Lumen Field in September.
Swift’s Eras Tour is expected to gross a massive $620 million by its completion, according to Forbes.
