Liberal MP Kirsty Duncan addressed a committee of MPs and discussed her concerns about the need for safe sport reform. She revealed that when her time as sport minister ended in 2019, she was told that the focus should be on returning to the true essence of sport rather than prioritizing child protection. Duncan expressed her disappointment with the resistance from sporting bodies towards safe sport initiatives, including a national help line and a third-party investigator. She emphasized the urgency of taking action now, especially after hearing testimonies from athletes. Fencer Emily Mason and other athletes also called for a national inquiry to address the ongoing issues of abuse in sports. The hearings were prompted by media reports of sexual assault allegations within Hockey Canada. While steps have been taken to address safety in sport, there is still a need to address bigger systemic issues. Duncan took a medical leave but remained a member of Parliament for Etobicoke North. She called for the inquiry into Canada’s safe sport crisis shortly after announcing her leave. With the necessary reforms and investigations, it is hoped that the culture of abuse in Canadian sports will be eradicated.
