NASA Contracts Nuclear-Powered Rocket to Propel Human Exploration Towards Mars

NASA has revealed that it has chosen Lockheed Martin to lead the design, construction, and testing of a nuclear rocket that could revolutionize space travel to Mars. The project, known as DRACO (Demonstration Rocket for Agile Cislunar Operations), aims to significantly reduce the time it takes for humans to reach the Red Planet.

Jointly announced with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), this contract marks a crucial milestone in NASA’s mission to send astronauts to Mars. The launch of a nuclear-powered rocket is anticipated as early as 2027.

Pam Melroy, NASA’s deputy administrator, expressed the importance of collaborating with DARPA and commercial space industry companies to expedite the development of the necessary technology for human expeditions to Mars. She stated that this demonstration is a vital step in achieving NASA’s goals of transporting crews into deep space for Moon to Mars missions.

Unlike current rocket engines, which rely on combustion, a nuclear thermal rocket offers greater efficiency. This type of engine enables spacecraft to accelerate over extended periods, allowing for faster and more fuel-efficient travel to Mars. Moreover, NASA asserts that a nuclear rocket would provide a higher level of thrust with a fraction of the propellant required by high-thrust systems.

Reducing the time spent in space is essential for crew safety as it limits exposure to radiation. The increased efficiency of a nuclear rocket would also create additional space onboard for scientific equipment.

To address safety concerns, officials explained that the nuclear rocket’s reactor would use a less-enriched form of uranium and would only be activated once it reaches space, minimizing any potential accidents. Comprehensive analysis has been conducted to ensure the lowest probability and minimal release of radioactive material.
