PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia Eagles have received confirmation from a league source that Eagles linebacker Myles Jack has made the decision to retire, according to ESPN Staff Writer Tim McManus.
At 27 years old, Jack joined the Eagles on a one-year contract, participating in first-team practices upon his arrival. However, his performance during training camp was relatively unremarkable, resulting in his decline on the team’s depth chart.
Prior to signing with the Eagles, Jack considered retirement after being released by the Pittsburgh Steelers. He even contemplated attending trade school to pursue a career as an electrician or plumber. Ultimately, his childhood friend, Arizona Cardinals safety Budda Baker, convinced him to train in Scottsdale in order to continue his professional football journey.
Through three months of intense training, Jack’s efforts paid off with the opportunity to work out with the Eagles. The team was seeking experienced linebackers to bolster their unproven lineup, leading to the signings of Jack and Zach Cunningham on the same day.
Jack reflected on his journey, saying, “That’s just how life goes. One week you’re on the couch playing ‘Call of Duty,’ the next week you’re playing with the [NFC] champions.”
While Cunningham has risen in the team’s depth chart and has a chance to start alongside Nakobe Dean, Jack has fallen out of contention.
A standout player at UCLA, Jack was selected in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars. Throughout his seven-year career with the Jaguars and Steelers, he started 95 games, accumulating 617 tackles and 6.5 sacks.
Jack’s career surpassed expectations, considering concerns about a degenerative knee condition that arose during his college years.
The decision for retirement was initially reported by NFL Network.
