Shannen Doherty has shared an update on her battle with cancer, revealing that the disease has now spread to her brain. In a video posted on Instagram on Tuesday, the actor can be seen undergoing radiation therapy for brain metastases, or metastatic brain tumors. The footage was taken just a week after the metastases were revealed in a CT scan. Doherty, who was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer in 2020, wrote in the caption, “This is what cancer can look like.” The 52-year-old added that she was “extremely claustrophobic” and “there was a lot going on in my life.” Doherty separated from her husband of 11 years, Kurt Iswarienko, around the same time.
Despite the challenges she’s facing, Doherty has used her platform to raise awareness about cancer. In an Instagram post from October 2021, she shared a photo of herself without hair and with a nosebleed, writing, “Is it all pretty? NO but it’s truthful and my hope in sharing is that we all become more educated, more familiar with what cancer looks like.” She added, “I hope I encourage people to get mammograms, to get regular checkups, to cut thru the fear and face whatever might be in front of you.” Doherty also shared a video of herself getting fitted for a mask to wear during radiation treatment. “Thank you for being vulnerable,” commented a viewer who described themselves as a two-time breast cancer survivor.
