The Good Vibes music festival in Kuala Lumpur was abruptly canceled after singer Matty Healy criticized Malaysia’s anti-LGBTQ+ laws during a performance. According to Rolling Stone, the government deemed Healy’s behavior “unprofessional” and a defiance of Malaysian laws, leading to the festival’s closure. The band, 1975, has also been banned from performing in Malaysia in the future.
During his performance on Friday, Healy apologized to fans for not being aware of the laws beforehand. Malaysia criminalizes same-sex relationships, punishable by imprisonment and caning. Healy expressed his frustration, stating, “I do not see the point of inviting the 1975 to a country and then telling us who we can have sex with.” After their seventh song, Healy announced that the band had been banned. The festival organizers also expressed their apologies, acknowledging that 1975’s management had assured compliance with local performance guidelines. However, the nation’s communications and digital minister called Healy’s behavior “very rude.” (Read more LGBTQ stories.)
