Multiple US Government Agencies Targeted by Cyberattack Exploiting Software Vulnerabilities

A cyberattack exploiting software vulnerabilities targets several US government agencies

Multiple US government agencies have fallen victim to a global hacking campaign that exploited a vulnerability in file transfer software commonly used for computer-to-computer transfers.

‘We are actively investigating the impacts of the attack,’ stated Eric Goldstein, executive assistant director for cybersecurity at the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA).

The hackers took advantage of a vulnerability in a software program called MOVEIt, although it is still uncertain whether sensitive information was compromised or if government systems experienced disruptions.

While the exact number of federal agencies affected was not disclosed by CISA, Goldstein confirmed that his agency is offering assistance to several agencies that have encountered intrusions.

In addition to the federal agencies, the cyber attack has also targeted state governments in Minnesota and Illinois, and the state of Georgia’s entire university system, as well as British broadcaster the BBC and Zellis, a payroll provider used by hundreds of companies in Britain

This recent report follows a series of significant cyber attacks on the United States in recent months.

In late May, the Russian-speaking hacking group known as CLOP began exploiting a newly discovered flaw in widely used file-transfer software called MOVEit. The hackers exploited the vulnerability in numerous susceptible organizations.

Progress Software, the owner and distributor of MOVEit as a secure managed file transfer software, advised its customers to install updates to address the flaw and provided additional security recommendations.
