MTV Video Music Awards 2023: Taylor Swift Emerges as Top Nominee

The popular music icon has garnered seven nominations for her groundbreaking music video, Anti-Hero. She is also nominated in the prestigious artist of the year category, alongside musical powerhouses Beyonce, Doja Cat, Karol G, Nicki Minaj, and Shakira.

Swift already boasts 14 VMAs and clinched the video of the year award last year for her hit track, “All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor’s Version)”, making her the first artist to win this prestigious award three times.

The artist’s lead single from her tenth studio album, “Midnights”, will go head-to-head with other impressive contenders like Doja Cat’s “Attention”, Miley Cyrus’s “Flowers”, Minaj’s “Super Freaky Girl”, Olivia Rodrigo’s “Vampire”, Sam Smith and Kim Petras’s “Unholy”, and SZA’s “Kill Bill” in the video of the year category.

Swift’s chart-topping success with Anti-Hero last year secured her the impressive distinction of dominating both the music charts and the official charts. She continues to showcase this popular track, along with other hits from her extensive discography, on her current The Eras Tour in the US before embarking on international performances.

Following closely behind Swift is US R&B singer SZA, who has also secured an impressive six VMA nominations. Doja Cat, Kim Petras, Miley Cyrus, Nicki Minaj, Olivia Rodrigo, and Sam Smith closely trail behind with five nods each.

Other notable artists such as Blackpink, Diddy, and Shakira have received four VMA nominations, showcasing their exceptional talent and impact in the music industry.

This year’s VMAs also introduce a record number of first-time nominees, with 35 artists receiving recognition for their outstanding contributions. Notable newcomers include Ice Spice, Kim Petras, PinkPantheress, and indie rock supergroup Boygenius, consisting of Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker, and Lucy Dacus.

Fan voting for the VMAs begins next Tuesday across 15 gender-neutral categories, including the newly introduced best Afrobeats category, and concludes on Friday, September 1.

Voting in the best new artist category will remain active throughout the award show, which will be held at the Prudential Centre in Newark, New Jersey on September 12.
