Mother from Lancaster Admits Guilt in Tragic Demise of 7-Month-Old Child

A 25-year-old woman from Lancaster has pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in connection with the death of her 7-month-old son in November 2018. Anaiyah Alise Perry has also pleaded guilty to four felony counts of child abuse related to the boy. Deputy District Attorney Jonathan Hatami stated that Perry is facing a sentence of 21 years and four months in state prison. Her sentencing is scheduled for September 29 at the Lancaster courthouse.

Perry was arrested by Los Angeles County sheriff’s detectives in September 2019 and has been held in custody on $2 million bail ever since. Initially charged with murder and assault on a child causing death, those charges are expected to be dismissed as a result of her guilty plea, in which she waived her right to appeal the case.

During an April 2021 hearing where Perry was ordered to stand trial, a neighbor named Dustin Stober testified that the boy’s father came to his house on November 6, 2018, carrying his son and begging for help. Stober’s wife called 911 while he performed CPR on the baby. The father appeared visibly upset and crying, while Perry remained emotionless.

The baby was quickly taken to Antelope Valley Hospital and later airlifted to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, where he passed away the following day. Dr. Matthew Miller, who conducted the autopsy, revealed at the April 2021 hearing that the cause of death was blunt force neck trauma, ruling it a homicide.

During the same hearing, Dr. Carol Berkowitz, a board-certified child abuse pediatrician, stated that her analysis of the case records led her to believe that the boy had experienced a “shaking motion” around the time of his death, not 10 to 14 days earlier as initially claimed. Testimony from sheriff’s investigators revealed that Perry denied shaking the baby at first, but later admitted to lightly shaking him while gently rocking him back and forth about a week and a half prior to his death.

Perry has been prohibited from having any contact with her older son, who has been permanently removed from her custody, according to the prosecutor.
