Three women were hospitalized in Montana after being viciously attacked by an otter. The incident occurred during a floating trip on the Jefferson River to celebrate Jen Royce’s birthday.
In a detailed Facebook post, Royce described how she saw the otter attacking her friend without any warning. The otter’s aggression lasted for approximately five minutes, causing severe injuries all over her body.
Despite the terrifying ordeal, they managed to escape the river. However, they had to wait for nearly an hour until help arrived.
Royce was eventually airlifted to the hospital, where she underwent surgery for her injuries. She suffered puncture wounds, lost a significant portion of her right ear, and received numerous stitches.
Her two friends also received medical treatment for their wounds.
Royce mentioned in an update on a GoFundMe page that the emotional impact of the attack would be challenging to overcome.
This incident is one of several recent otter attacks in the United States, including an incident involving Crystal Finn, an actor from Succession, in northern California.
Although otter attacks on humans are rare, they can become hostile when they feel threatened.
Royce pleaded for understanding, asking people not to blame the victims, and clarifying that they did not intentionally provoke or approach the otter.
North American River Otters can reach lengths of three to 4½ feet, with the tail accounting for 35-40% of their total length and weighing up to 34 pounds.
