As a result of ongoing heavy rainfall and the potential for damage from Tropical Storm Hilary overnight, the superintendent announced on Sunday that all Los Angeles Unified School District campuses will be closed on Monday.
Superintendent Alberto Carvalho explained that the district cannot risk keeping campuses open when there is uncertainty about whether schools will be damaged overnight or if conditions will worsen, making it unsafe for students and staff to reach the campuses.
“Due to our inability to assess building conditions and determine school accessibility, it is nearly impossible for us to open,” Carvalho stated during a late afternoon press conference.
Carvalho highlighted the fact that some LAUSD students start their journey to school as early as 5:30 or 6 a.m., and some bus drivers begin work as early as 4:30 a.m. Additionally, many district employees live far away from their workplace.
“To ensure the safety of every child and LAUSD staff member, canceling school is the responsible decision,” he added.
All athletic activities and other external activities will also be canceled, Carvalho confirmed.
While independent charter schools are also expected to be closed, Carvalho advised parents to confirm the closure status with the respective operators.
Carvalho also announced that the district will establish grab-and-go centers to distribute food to students and families who heavily rely on LAUSD food programs. Further information regarding the distribution centers will be made available online, with operations expected to begin on Monday afternoon.
