The Tampa Bay Rays have released a statement in response to allegations made against their shortstop, Wander Franco, on social media. The team acknowledges that they have been made aware of these posts and that Major League Baseball is currently conducting its own investigation.

In their official statement, the Rays stated, “During today’s game, we were made aware of the social media posts that are circulating regarding Wander Franco. We take the situation seriously and are in close contact with Major League Baseball as it conducts its due diligence.”

Following Tampa Bay’s loss to the Guardians, Rays manager Kevin Cash addressed the speculation. While he acknowledged being aware of the rumors, he declined to comment further. Cash did clarify that Franco’s absence from the lineup was due to a scheduled day off and not related to any ongoing issues.

In place of Franco, the Rays chose to play the debutant infielder Osleivis Basabe. Basabe was recalled prior to the game, with lefty Josh Fleming being demoted.

Franco, aged 22, recently signed an 11-year contract extension with the Rays. He earned his first All-Star Game selection this season and has a batting average of .281/.344/.475 in 112 games.
