Utah Republican Sen. Mitt Romney announced on Wednesday that he will not seek reelection to the Senate and called for a “new generation of leaders.” In his statement, he criticized both President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump.
Romney highlighted various critical issues, such as the rising national debt and the climate crisis, and expressed disappointment in the leadership abilities of both Biden and Trump, stating that they are not effectively addressing these issues.
Romney’s decision to not run for reelection will mark the departure of a distinctive voice from the Senate. Throughout his career, Romney has been willing to challenge his own party and has been a vocal critic of Trump, which is uncommon among Republicans.
In 2020, Romney made history by being the first senator in US history to vote to remove a president from the same party from office. He found Trump guilty of abuse of power during Trump’s first impeachment trial.
Romney stressed the importance of a new generation of leaders, as the age of prominent politicians becomes more scrutinized. He believes that the decisions that shape the future should be made by younger leaders.
At 76 years old, Romney said it’s time for him to step aside and make way for the new generation. However, he assured that he will continue to fight for the issues he cares about until his term ends in January 2025.
Romney did not hold back in criticizing his Senate Republican colleagues who continued to support Trump. He expressed his disappointment in their lack of belief in the Constitution.
An excerpt from his upcoming biography by McKay Coppins provides more insight into Romney’s experiences in the U.S. Senate.
Coppins recounts a harrowing experience on January 6, 2021, where Romney narrowly avoided a crowd of rioters during the Capitol insurrection. He also expressed frustration with colleagues who continued to object during the electoral college proceedings, calling their actions disingenuous.
According to Coppins, Romney revealed that some Republican senators who voted to acquit Trump in his second impeachment trial did so out of fear for their safety and the safety of their families.
Romney also expressed concerns about Biden’s age and his ability to make convincing arguments in the next election. He even entertained the idea of running again to challenge Trump’s rhetoric and had discussions with Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin about forming a third party.
Romney has had a prominent career in American politics, including running as the Republican Party nominee in the 2012 presidential race and serving as the governor of Massachusetts from 2003 to 2007.
During his announcement, Romney highlighted his concerns with both Trump and Biden. He criticized their failure to effectively address issues like deficits and debt, global warming, and China.
Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell praised Romney’s accomplishments and expertise, expressing regret at his departure from the Senate in the coming year.
