The 72nd Miss Universe pageant has been marked by historic firsts. Another groundbreaking first was the appearance of Miss Pakistan, Erica Robin, in a burkini during the swimsuit competition of the event.
The sight of Robin walking across the Miss Universe stage on Saturday in a baby-pink burkini with a shiny neckline captivated the audience. Notably, while other contestants wore metallic swimsuits with daring cutouts, Robin’s modest yet elegant choice stood out.
Robin, one of the top 20 contestants, wrote history as the first Miss Pakistan. She mentioned experiencing mixed reactions from her peers back home regarding her decision to compete. In her Miss Universe bio, Robin said, “I’m most proud of standing up for what I believe in my life. Recently, right after I was announced as the new titleholder for Miss Universe Pakistan, I received some backlash from different sectors of the community, but I would like to stand up for what I believe in.”
She remarked, “Despite these criticisms, I was ready to face any challenges ahead of me while maintaining my values as a young modern Pakistani woman, representing our rich culture and heritage, and showing the world that Pakistan can celebrate the success of women.”
According to her bio, Robin, part of the Christian religious minority in Pakistan, which makes up around 1% of the population, champions gender equality in the workplace and volunteers at the nonprofit Karachi Down Syndrome Program in a Voice for Change video submitted to the competition.
Joining the prestigious ranks, Miss Nepal, Jane Dipika Garrett, Miss Colombia, Camila Avella, and Miss Portugal, Marina Machete, also made history at this year’s Miss Universe competition. They each marked different milestones, contributing to the pageant’s inclusivity.
