Minnesota Rep. Tom Emmer Launches Candidacy for House Speaker Nomination – The Visionary Leadership Committee

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Rep. Tom Emmer announces bid for U.S. House Speaker

Rep. Tom Emmer has officially declared his candidacy for the role of U.S. House Speaker. This comes after the removal of Rep. Kevin McCarthy earlier this month, which was an unprecedented event in the House.

Emmer took to Twitter on Saturday morning to express his intentions, stating that he aims to bring the Republican conference together and focus on their legislative agenda.

He emphasized the accomplishments of the Republican majority in the House over the past 10 months, and acknowledged the challenges they face in maintaining their majority. Emmer stressed the need to fight to hold onto their House majority and deliver on conservative policies.

The vacancy in House leadership has caused disruptions in Congress, preventing them from conducting business. Previous bids from Republican Reps. Steve Scalise and Jim Jordan were both rejected by different factions within the House Republican caucus.

Emmer’s decision to run for Speaker comes as a surprise, as he had previously announced his intention to seek the position of House Majority Leader. Currently, he holds the position of majority whip in the House leadership hierarchy.

Finstad endorses Emmer as Speaker

Minnesota Congressman Brad Finstad publicly announces support for Emmer

“I have known Congressman Emmer for over two decades, dating back to our time in the Minnesota Legislature,” said Finstad. “Since joining Congress, it has been an honor to work alongside Tom and he has become a tremendous mentor and a trusted friend.”

“In January, our Conference elected Congressman Emmer as Majority Whip, displaying his exceptional leadership capabilities. Whether it’s within Minnesota or across the nation, Emmer has earned the trust and respect needed to lead the People’s House. I wholeheartedly endorse him for Speaker.”

“The American people deserve a functional Congress. I hope that my colleagues can come together to elect a new Speaker, restore order, and prioritize serving the American people.”

During this interim period, Rep. Patrick McHenry has been acting as speaker pro tempore.

Rep. Ken Buck of Colorado has consistently shown support for Emmer during the recent speaker votes where Jim Jordan failed to secure enough votes.

Earlier this month, Democratic Rep. Dean Phillips expressed no regrets about voting to remove Kevin McCarthy and suggested Tom Emmer as a replacement.

Phillips emphasized the urgency of electing a new Speaker to restore functionality to Congress and address critical issues such as supporting Israel and Ukraine. He emphasized the importance of maintaining freedom and democracy in the face of threats.

Additional contenders emerge

Following the withdrawal of Jim Jordan’s nomination, some Republicans are considering running for the speakership.

Rep. Kevin Hern of Oklahoma declared his candidacy and expressed the need for extensive outreach to garner support from fellow Republicans.

Initially, Hern had shown interest after McCarthy’s removal but decided against competing in a three-way race for Speaker that would prolong the process and create further divisions within the party.

Rep. Jack Bergman of Michigan also announced his candidacy, emphasizing his commitment to serving the nation and ensuring a stable 118th Congress.
