Migrants Transported from Texas Arrive at LA Union Station

In a move similar to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a group of immigrants was transported from the Texas border to Los Angeles and dropped off at Union Station, according to Texas Governor Greg Abbott.

Abbott stated, “Texas’ small border towns are overwhelmed by the thousands of people illegally crossing into Texas from Mexico due to President Biden’s failure to secure the border. Los Angeles is a popular destination for migrants, especially since it has declared itself a sanctuary city. Texas will continue providing relief to our border communities until President Biden takes action to secure the border.”

Last week, the Los Angeles City Council approved a motion for Los Angeles to become an official sanctuary city for immigrants, prompting the arrival of approximately 40 immigrants, including children, in Los Angeles. It is unclear if more buses are en route.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass condemned the actions, stating, “It is abhorrent that an American elected official is using human beings as pawns for political gain.” She also mentioned that the city was prepared for this situation and that various departments were mobilized along with nonprofit partners to ensure the immigrants’ safety and well-being.

Mayor Bass continued, “Los Angeles is a city that treats all people with dignity and compassion. We will not be swayed by politicians playing with human lives. We will work closely with nonprofit organizations and local, state, and federal partners to ensure the well-being of immigrants.”

Daniel Lopez, deputy communications director for Governor Gavin Newsom, expressed California’s approach to immigration, stating, “California, as a border state, focuses on supporting and welcoming asylum seekers rather than demonizing them. We are working closely with the county, city of Los Angeles, and community partners to ensure the safety and well-being of newly arrived families.”

The immigrants were taken to St. Anthony’s Croatian Catholic Church in Chinatown, where the Los Angeles Fire Department ensured their health and well-being. The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights also provided assistance. Earlier, California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced an investigation into the transport of immigrants from Florida to northern California, seeking information from Governor DeSantis’ office.

There has been no immediate response from Governor Newsom or Attorney General Bonta regarding the migrants bused to Los Angeles from Texas. Governor Abbott’s office reported that Texas has been providing buses to transport migrants to various locations, including Washington, D.C., New York City, Chicago, Philadelphia, and now Denver. Over 21,600 migrants have been sent from Texas to these sanctuary cities since the busing effort began last spring.
