Microsoft and ChatGPT technology enhance SKT’s A.I. chatbot capabilities

SK Telecom has developed an innovative artificial intelligence chatbot called “A.” (pronounced “A dot”) that possesses its own unique character. This chatbot seamlessly integrates various services, ranging from music streaming to e-commerce, and is set to be fully launched in 2023.

SK Telecom, one of South Korea’s prominent mobile carriers, has announced an upgraded version of its chatbot, equipped with a feature powered by the Microsoft cloud and leveraging the technology behind OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Last year, the company introduced a beta version of the chatbot, named “A.” (pronounced “A dot”), in South Korea, and has since been enhancing its capabilities in preparation for an official release.

The latest addition to “A.” is the implementation of a feature called “Chat T,” powered by ChatGPT technology, which is built on Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI cloud computing service. Similar to ChatGPT, users can now interact with the chatbot and request answers to their queries.

In addition, the Korean telecoms giant has also introduced a chatroom function within “A.,” enabling users to engage in conversations with an AI character.

“Through these conversations, users can enjoy sharing information about their daily lives, as if they were conversing with a close friend,” stated SK Telecom in a press release.

SK Telecom aims to differentiate “A.” from ChatGPT by incorporating a variety of cartoon avatars for users to interact with. The company has introduced more AI agents known as “A. friends,” equipped with advanced conversational AI technology, enabling emotional and human-like dialogue.

“By engaging in conversations with ‘A. friends,’ users can receive counseling and advice on a wide array of topics,” added SK Telecom.

Although primarily recognized as a mobile network provider, SK Telecom has actively pursued diversification into new sectors. The company is planning to launch a flying taxi service by 2025. Furthermore, CNBC reported in February that SK Telecom’s AI chip spin-off, Sapeon, seeks a $400 million valuation through an upcoming funding round.
