Michael Cera, Star of ‘Barbie,’ Faced an Internal ‘Crisis’ Following the Massive Success of ‘Superbad’

  • Michael Cera, known for his roles in “Superbad” and “Juno,” opened up about feeling “paranoid and weird” when he rose to fame at the age of 19, according to an interview with The Guardian.
  • Cera’s breakout came in 2007 with the releases of “Superbad” and “Juno.”
  • The pressures of fame overwhelmed Cera, and he contemplated quitting acting.

Renowned actor Michael Cera revealed that he faced a “crisis” after achieving fame through his roles in “Superbad” and “Juno.”

In 2007, at the age of 19, Cera became an overnight sensation due to the success of both films.

During a recent interview with The Guardian, Cera admitted that he was unprepared for the consequences of fame and found it overwhelming.

He stated, “I struggled with everyday situations. Fame makes you extremely uncomfortable and paranoid. While there were amazing aspects to it and I met incredible people, there were also negative energies that I wasn’t equipped to handle.”

Cera even turned down an opportunity to host “Saturday Night Live” and contemplated leaving acting altogether.

He explained, “There came a point when I decided to avoid roles that would further increase my fame. I was going through a personal crisis… I was experiencing the intense scrutiny and pressure, which I didn’t enjoy. At that time, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to continue as an actor.”

Ultimately, Cera stuck with acting, thankful that he committed to his lead role in “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” (2010), which revitalized his career.

The 35-year-old actor also recalled the challenges of establishing boundaries with fans at a young age.

He stated, “Drunk people were a classic example. They would recognize you and become overly enthusiastic, but it could also become toxic. As a kid, people felt entitled to invade your personal space without respect. I struggled with asserting my own boundaries.”

He recounted a particularly uncomfortable experience at a bar soon after the release of “Superbad.”

“The whole time I was there, it felt like everyone was hyper-aware of me. It was a mistake,” shared the star of “Arrested Development.”

In his latest film, “Barbie,” releasing this Friday, Cera portrays a character named Allan, inspired by a real discontinued Barbie doll.
