User traffic on Twitter has decreased since the introduction of Meta’s text-based platform, Threads. According to a third-party tracker, Threads has gained over 100 million sign-ups within its first week of launch.

Threads, which launched in the U.S. last week, is being promoted by Meta executives as a more positive and inclusive “public square” compared to Twitter. Early indications suggest that users are favorably responding to the new platform. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that Threads has already garnered 70 million sign-ups, surpassing initial expectations.

Twitter, on the other hand, seems to have suffered a decline in user activity. Matthew Prince, CEO of Cloudflare, shared a screenshot on Twitter demonstrating a decline in traffic on the platform.

Twitter provided an automated response to CNBC’s request for comment, while Meta has not responded at this time.

Threads’ impressive growth can be attributed to its integration with Meta’s existing social network, Instagram. Users can sign up for Threads using their existing Instagram handles and maintain a portion of their follower base as others join the new app.

Notably, Threads achieved the milestone of 100 million users at a faster pace than OpenAI’s generative chatbot, ChatGPT, which took two months to reach the same user count.

Although Threads has not yet launched in Europe due to regulatory complexities, Meta’s Instagram chief Adam Mosseri acknowledged the potential of the European market. If Threads manages to retain its user base, it could establish itself as a strong competitor to Twitter, which reported nearly 238 million daily active users in its most recent quarterly earnings report.

Furthermore, Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter, recently expressed concern about Threads through a letter from his lawyer accusing Meta of “unlawful misappropriation” of trade secrets.

In a separate incident, Musk and Zuckerberg engaged in a public exchange of insults on social media, with Zuckerberg mocking Musk’s tweet style and Musk responding with derogatory remarks about Zuckerberg.
