  • Rapper Tory Lanez has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for the 2020 shooting of Megan Thee Stallion.
  • Lanez was found guilty of three felony charges, including assault with a semiautomatic firearm.
  • The prosecution had requested a 13-year prison sentence.

Rapper Tory Lanez has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for the 2020 shooting of Megan Thee Stallion. The sentencing was handed down by Judge David Herriford in Los Angeles Superior Court after reviewing over 70 letters from Lanez’s family and supporters, including fellow musician Iggy Azalea.

Before the judge’s decision, Lanez briefly spoke, expressing that he still cares about Megan Thee Stallion and referring to her as his “friend,” as reported by legal journalist Meghann Cuniff.

Megan Thee Stallion, also known as Megan Pete, did not attend the hearing. However, Deputy District Attorney Kathy Ta read a written statement on her behalf, highlighting Lanez’s lack of remorse and the pain she has endured since the shooting.

In her statement, Stallion said, “He not only shot me, he made a mockery of my trauma. He tried to position himself as a victim and set out to destroy my character and my soul. He lied to anyone that would listen and paid bloggers to disseminate false information about the case on social media. He released music videos and songs to damage my character and continue his crusade. At first, he tried to deny the shooting ever happened. Then, he attempted to place the blame on my former best friend. In his tantrum of lies, he’s blamed the system, blamed the press, and, as of late, he’s using his childhood trauma to shield himself and avoid culpability.”

Tory Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, was found guilty by a Los Angeles jury on three charges related to the incident with Megan Thee Stallion in July 2020. The charges include assault with a semiautomatic firearm, possession of a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence.

In June 2022, Los Angeles prosecutors requested a 13-year prison sentence for Lanez. The incident took place at a party hosted by Kylie Jenner in Hollywood Hills, California. Lanez was arrested on a felony count of carrying a concealed weapon in a vehicle. He was later accused of shooting Megan Thee Stallion, initially denying it but later being accused by Stallion herself.

In October 2020, Lanez was charged with felony assault by the former Los Angeles district attorney Jackie Lacey. He pleaded not guilty, and a $190,000 bond was issued. Lanez was ordered to stay at least 100 yards away from Megan Thee Stallion. However, prosecutors later accused him of violating the order when he appeared at a performance where Stallion was present.

In December 2022, prosecutors added a third charge to Lanez’s case, bringing the potential sentence to 22 years in prison and the possibility of deportation to Canada, his home country.
