In a surprising turn of events, former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has vehemently denied reports suggesting his imminent resignation from Congress before the completion of his term. McCarthy dismissed the rumors during a press conference on Friday, affirming that he still has important tasks to accomplish.
When asked if he would step down from his position, McCarthy firmly stated, “No, I am not resigning. We are determined to maintain our majority, and I will continue assisting the people who entrusted me with their vote, while also working to expand our reach.”
However, sources who are familiar with McCarthy’s thought process claim that he has been seriously contemplating an early departure from Congress. Speculation regarding his resignation intensified after the House Speaker’s election.
During the press conference, McCarthy was pressed further on whether he had considered leaving early. He responded, “Whenever I have to decide whether to run for reelection, I always evaluate my options.”
Following the House’s decision to remove McCarthy from his position as Speaker, he did not confirm whether he would continue serving in Congress. When asked about his future, McCarthy responded, “I’ll think about that.”
Reports initially surfaced in Politico, revealing McCarthy’s contemplation of resignation.
The Republican Party in the House is still recovering from the historic vote that resulted in McCarthy’s removal from the speakership. After declining to run for the position again, a competition has emerged among House Majority Leader Steve Scalise and GOP Rep. Jim Jordan to become the new Speaker. However, due to deep divisions within the party, it remains uncertain if House Republicans can unite behind a single candidate.
During the press conference, McCarthy confirmed that he had spoken with both Scalise and Jordan but declined to endorse either candidate when pressed.
Regarding former President Donald Trump’s endorsement of Jordan, McCarthy emphasized that only House members have voting privileges, emphasizing the importance of individual decision-making.
