Maui Wildfire Evacuees Embrace Nomadic Lifestyle: A Journey of Resilience

Evacuees Adapt to Nomadic Lifestyle After Devastating Maui Wildfire

In the wake of the destructive wildfires that ravaged Maui on August 8, 2023, a staggering number of 6,879 evacuees find themselves still displaced and residing in various Maui hotels this week, with a majority seeking refuge in the scenic area of Kaanapali. The impact of this disaster has been far-reaching, causing individuals like Tiffany Teruya to reflect on the profound effects it has had on housing and education. Teruya, who previously resided in a two-bedroom apartment at Kaiaulu o Kupuohi, an 89-unit affordable rental housing complex, shares her touching story amidst the ruins of her former home.

Accompanying Teruya on her tumultuous journey is her young son, Puʻuwai Nahoʻoikaika, who leans on his mother for support. Nahoʻoikaika’s innocence is evident as he enjoys some cookies while listening to his mother’s interview, blissfully unaware of the trials they have faced. However, the pain is palpable as he reacts emotionally to the memories shared by his mother, causing tears to form in her eyes.

Another survivor, Charles Nahale, speaks of his experience from the ruins of his family compound on Front Street. Nahale, a talented musician, laments the loss of his extensive collection of guitars and ukuleles, but cherishes the only one he managed to salvage. He strums the remaining guitar with a mixture of grief and determination, playing his heart out to overcome the sorrow caused by the wildfire. Displaying his resilience, Nahale proudly showcases the quilts gifted to him by his clients, serving as a symbol of hope and solidarity in the face of adversity.

As the displaced individuals go about their daily lives in temporary accommodations, the Honua Kai Resort stands as a reminder of the strength and resilience that the community embodies. Each person finds solace in their own way, whether it’s soaking in the sun at a pool or sharing fears of displacement with others.

In the spirit of aloha, every act of support counts. Click here to access the MAUI RELIEF Fund and make a donation that will provide much-needed assistance to these evacuees as they navigate the challenges of their nomadic lifestyle.
