Maui Humane Society’s Tireless Rescue Efforts Continue to Reunite Pets with Families in the Wake of Wildfires

Since the devastating wildfires in Maui began in August, a massive effort has been made to help families find their missing pets and reunite them with their loved ones. The Maui Humane Society launched a Facebook group called “Maui Fires Pets Help Group” the day after the fires started, and it has gained nearly 9,000 members since then. In this group, people can post about lost or found pets and ask for or offer assistance. The Maui Humane Society is dedicated to rescuing and reuniting animals affected by the wildfires, and they have been working closely with local and federal search and rescue teams. They have already rescued seven cats from the burn zone and received over 1,300 lost pet reports. However, there have been some frustrations as pet owners and animal rescue organizations have been unable to access the burn zone to rescue surviving animals. Despite this, the Maui Humane Society has been doing everything they can to provide care and support to the animals they have rescued. They have taken in nearly 200 animals from Lahaina, with 30% of them being reunited with their families. They have also distributed pet food, supplies, water, and hay bales to animals in need. In addition, they have transferred 130 animals to off-island adoption homes to make room for more rescue animals. The Maui Humane Society has also helped pet owners with necessary paperwork and supplies so they can leave Maui with their pets. They have received overwhelming support from the local community and have raised over $750,000 in donations through a Facebook fundraiser. As emergency shelters close down, they are partnering with organizations across the island to ensure that pets have the supplies they need to stay in their homes. The Maui Humane Society is continuing to serve the community and asks anyone in need of pet supplies to visit their organization. They no longer need donations of supplies or pet food but are accepting monetary donations to support their ongoing efforts. Overall, their mission is to protect and save the lives of Maui’s animals and inspire compassion towards all animals. For more information, visit mauihumanesociety.org.
