Representative Matt Gaetz, a Republican from Florida, believes that getting expelled from Congress for removing House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, a Republican from California, would be well worth it.
Gaetz, during an appearance on “Meet The Press” on Sunday, dismissed the idea of losing his seat in the House of Representatives as “crazy.”
However, when asked if removing McCarthy was worth potentially losing his job, Gaetz responded with a resounding “Absolutely.”
“I am here to fight for my constituents and ensure that America does not face financial ruin,” Gaetz declared.
Gaetz then shifted the conversation to the federal budget, labeling McCarthy and others who support full funding of the government as “agents of chaos.”
Last week, hard-right Republicans intensified their revolt against McCarthy due to disagreements over his willingness to negotiate with Democrats. On October 3, the hardliners, with support from House Democrats, voted to remove McCarthy from the speakership, citing the last-minute deal to prevent a government shutdown in late September as the final straw.
During the interview, Gaetz avoided directly addressing whether the move to oust McCarthy undermined the security of the United States, especially given the escalating conflict between Israel and Palestine. Instead, he stated, “I don’t think other countries think about Kevin McCarthy’s speakership as much as Kevin McCarthy does. We will have a new speaker next week, and we will be prepared to do our work.”
