MasterChef viewers left confused by unusual detail in episode as show experiences editing mishap

MasterChef Australia enthusiasts were left astounded by what initially seemed to be an editing blunder during Monday’s episode of the show. The appearance of former contestant and fan-favorite Poh Ling Yeow, aged 49, as a guest presenter for the ‘mystery box’ challenge had viewers puzzled as they noticed that half of the contestants were absent. Social media platforms were flooded with comments pointing out this peculiar detail, with many unaware that eight of the aspiring cooks had tested positive for Covid-19 while filming.

Confused viewers took to Facebook to express their confusion, with one person asking, “Where are all the contestants? Am I missing something?” Another added, “This season is strange, I have no idea what’s going on—they seem to be cutting parts out—I can’t get into it.” Another Twitter user tweeted alongside a GIF, “Eight contestants with Covid?” Judge Melissa Leong addressed the situation, explaining that Covid-19 was the reason for the missing contestants and stating, “Welcome to a brand new week in the MasterChef kitchen. As you can see, a couple more contestants are missing today. Covid strikes again. But, in lighter news, you guys have survived your first elimination!”

Meanwhile, the sick contestants remained in isolation while filming for the show continued. Despite the clarification, one fan still found the situation unfair and wrote on a MasterChef Facebook page, “How is it fair that half the contestants had Covid and missed out on elimination?” Another viewer replied, “When they all return, they will also face an elimination as a group while tonight’s contestants watch. They announced it at the start of the show.”

In an unfortunate turn of events, beloved MasterChef judge Jock Zonfrillo was laid to rest in a private funeral in Sydney on Saturday, surrounded by 200 family members and friends. The emotional service came a day before the premiere of the show, following the shock death of Zonfrillo at the age of 46 on April 30. High profile celebrities and chefs offered support to his grieving family and paid tribute to him during the service.

Zonfrillo passed away in his hotel room at Zagame’s House in Carlton, Melbourne and was discovered by police on May 1. His wife, who was in Italy at the time with their children, contacted the authorities for a welfare check. The police initially believed that Zonfrillo’s death was due to natural causes and did not find any evidence suggesting otherwise. Zonfrillo is survived by his third wife, Lauren Fried, and his four children from previous marriages, Ava, Sophia, Alfie, and Isla.
