Thousands Gather in Washington, D.C., to Call for Cease-Fire in Gaza
On Saturday, thousands of people gathered in Washington, D.C., to demand a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip after a month of relentless bombing from Israel. The demonstrators, draped in the colors of the Palestinian flag, congregated around Freedom Plaza near the White House, brandishing handmade signs with powerful slogans such as “One Holocaust doesn’t justify another” and “Let Gaza Live!”
The rally had a strong message not only for Israel but also for President Joe Biden, whose administration has pledged support for Israel despite the high number of casualties, including innocent children and older adults. Protesters held signs that read “GENOCIDE JOE, YOU LOST MY VOTE” and “END ALL U.S. AID TO ISRAEL.”
Organizers of the event claimed that it might be the largest pro-Palestinian rally in the history of the United States. Supporters traveled from various parts of the country, including Chicago and Florida, to join the worldwide condemnation of Israel’s military response. The rally featured speakers who led chants of “free, free Palestine,” and even musician Macklemore addressed the crowd, stating, “I know enough that this is a genocide.”
Several speakers at the rally warned President Biden of potential consequences in the 2024 presidential election if a cease-fire was not achieved. Nihad Awad, the executive director of the Council on American Islamic Relations, emphasized, “No ceasefire, no votes.”
While President Biden has called for a “pause” in the fighting to allow humanitarian aid and escape opportunities, the protesters demand a complete end to the violence.
