Bruins rookie Mason Lohrei lives up to the hype in ‘dynamite’ NHL debut originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston
In his highly-anticipated NHL debut, Mason Lohrei of the Boston Bruins proved that he belongs in the league. Given the opportunity to face the Toronto Maple Leafs, one of the top teams loaded with offensive talent, Lohrei showcased his skills and poise.
Unlike most rookies, Lohrei wasn’t sheltered but rather thrust into a top-four role due to injuries and a suspension within the Bruins’ defensive line. The pressure didn’t faze him as he excelled in all aspects of the game, contributing to the Bruins’ 3-2 shootout victory.
Jim Montgomery, the head coach of the Bruins, praised Lohrei’s performance, stating, “He was dynamite. He played really well. His poise with the puck in all three zones was very noticeable. He made a lot of intelligent hockey plays.”
Lohrei’s comfort with the puck was evident throughout the game, as he utilized his exceptional skating and transition skills to support offensive plays. He even secured his first career point with a secondary assist on a goal by Pavel Zacha.
Even on the penalty kill, Lohrei shined. His standout moment came in the second period when he disrupted a scoring chance by Tyler Bertuzzi and swiftly cleared the zone. The Bruins successfully killed off the penalty.
Despite facing elite forwards like John Tavares and William Nylander, Lohrei’s impact on the ice was undeniable. The Bruins generated more shot attempts, shots on net, scoring chances, and high-danger chances compared to the Leafs when Lohrei was on the ice during 5-on-5 play.
Mason Lohrei’s NHL debut wasn’t flawless, but his composure and decision-making were impressive for a player with zero experience in the league. Brad Marchand, the Bruins’ captain, commended Lohrei’s performance, highlighting his smarts and ability to make strong plays.
As the Bruins’ top prospect, Lohrei possesses the necessary attributes to be a regular NHL defenseman. Although he didn’t initially make the Opening Night roster due to depth on the left side of the blue line, injuries and a suspension have provided him with an opportunity, and he has capitalized on it thus far.
With key defensemen still sidelined, Lohrei could earn an extended stay in Boston. If he continues to perform at the same high level, it will be difficult for the Bruins to send him back to the minors.
