July 28 (UPI) — The Miami Marlins have bolstered their pitching staff by acquiring reliever David Robertson in a trade with the New York Mets, announced Friday.
In exchange for the veteran pitcher, the Marlins will send minor-league catcher Ronald Hernandez and infielder Marco Vargas to the Mets.
Robertson, 23, has performed exceptionally well this season with a 2.05 ERA, 14 saves, and a record of 4-2 in 40 appearances. Over his 15-year career, he has amassed a 2.84 ERA, 171 saves, and a 61-38 record in 771 appearances.
The two-time All-Star and 2009 World Series winner with the New York Yankees also reached the World Series last season as a member of the Philadelphia Phillies. Throughout his career, Robertson has also played for the Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, and Tampa Bay Rays.
The Miami Marlins, with their seventh-best ERA (4.04) among National League relief staff, expect Robertson’s arrival to strengthen their bullpen. However, it’s worth noting that Robertson will become a free agent after the current season.
The Marlins’ newly acquired prospects include 18-year-old Marco Vargas, ranked as the No. 18 prospect in the Marlins organization according to MLB Pipeline, and 21-year-old Ronald Hernandez, ranked as the No. 21 prospect.
Vargas has shown promising performance this season with a .283 batting average, two home runs, 19 RBIs, and eight stolen bases in 33 games for the Florida Complex League Marlins, the team’s rookie-level affiliate.
Hernandez, on the other hand, has displayed his talent with a .298 batting average, three home runs, and 25 RBIs over 31 games for the Florida Complex League Marlins this season.
The Marlins (55-48) are set to face the Detroit Tigers (46-57) at 6:40 p.m. EDT on Friday in Miami, while the Mets (48-54) will take on the Washington Nationals (43-60) at 7:10 p.m. in Queens.
