LOS ANGELES—Acclaimed TV actor Mark Margolis, known for his role as the sinister Hector Salamanca in the hit shows “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul,” passed away at the age of 83, his family confirmed on Friday, Aug. 4.
Margolis passed away on Thursday at a New York hospital after a brief illness, surrounded by his wife and son.
Bryan Cranston, the star of “Breaking Bad,” paid tribute to Margolis on Instagram, saying, “I am deeply saddened by the passing of my friend. Mark Margolis was not only a talented actor but also a wonderful human being. He was a joy to be around off the set but could transform into an intimidating and chilling character on set, as seen in ‘Breaking Bad’ and ‘Your Honor’.”
Bob Odenkirk, the star of “Better Call Saul,” described Margolis as a “powerful screen presence.”
The official social media account of “Breaking Bad” praised Margolis for his portrayal of Hector Salamanca, stating that he turned the character into one of the most unforgettable in television history using only his eyes, a bell, and minimal dialogue.
Margolis, born in Philadelphia in 1939, moved to New York to pursue his acting career. He achieved success as a character actor, appearing in films like “Scarface,” “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective,” and “Black Swan,” as well as the HBO series “Oz.”
In 2012, Margolis received an Emmy nomination for his role in “Breaking Bad.”
