Manchin pledges to oppose IRA implementation, calling it a ‘radical climate agenda’

On the first anniversary of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) being signed into law, Senator Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) reaffirmed his commitment to fighting against the Biden administration and officials who are attempting to undermine the legislation as part of their “radical climate agenda.”

In a lengthy statement, Manchin, a moderate from West Virginia, praised certain aspects of the IRA, which he helped draft. He described it as “one of the most historic pieces of legislation passed in decades,” particularly benefiting middle- and working-class families. He also highlighted its achievements in reducing the national debt, lowering prescription drug prices, and capping the price of insulin for seniors.

However, Manchin also took the opportunity to criticize the administration for what he perceives as political gamesmanship with the law. He emphasized the importance of energy security and criticized those who seek to undermine the IRA’s goal. He asserted that the legislation promotes an all-of-the-above energy policy, supporting the growth of both fossil fuels and renewables. Manchin believes that if implemented as designed, the IRA will ensure more reliable and affordable power for all Americans for years to come.

The senator made it clear that he will push back against any attempts to undermine this significant legislation, specifically targeting the Biden administration’s efforts to implement the IRA as a radical climate agenda instead of following the intent of the law as it was passed.

Manchin’s relationship with the IRA has been complicated. Earlier this year, he expressed his willingness to vote for its repeal due to his opposition to the administration’s implementation approach.

As Manchin considers his next political moves, which may involve running for a third term in the Senate, a potential third-party presidential bid with No Labels, or retirement at the end of next year, he stressed the need for bipartisan leadership and a focus on the goal of the IRA—supporting hardworking families and building a better, stronger, and more secure nation.

It is noteworthy that a Senate run for Manchin would likely involve a challenging race against West Virginia Governor Jim Justice (R), who has gained popularity and strong support from leading Republicans.
