Manchester United pays tribute to the late Sir Bobby Charlton during their successful match against Sheffield United on Saturday. In honor of the legendary club great who passed away at the age of 86, players laid a wreath at the center of the field and participated in a period of applause.
Before kickoff of the Premier League game, the stadium screens displayed a picture of a young Bobby Charlton while members of both teams stood in a line to pay their respects to one of the most iconic and revered players in the world.
The wreath laid in front of the Manchester United players bore a message: “In loving memory of Sir Bobby Charlton – a remarkable player and an even greater man. With heartfelt gratitude for your service, from everyone at Manchester United.”
Hearing about Charlton’s passing affected the team’s game preparations, according to defender Harry Maguire. He expressed, “Sir Bobby was a frequent presence in the dressing room and he always brought light and energy. He is an absolute legend of the club. While we are delighted with our win, this goes beyond football, and our thoughts are with his family. We will miss him, and the world will miss him.”
Manager Erik ten Hag added, “We bid our farewell to Bobby Charlton, remembering his magnificent contributions. He was exceptional not only on the pitch but also off the pitch. In honor of his great personality, we achieved a win in a respectable manner.”
In a touching moment, Manchester United fans rose to their feet after Diogo Dalot’s late winning goal and chanted “There’s only one Bobby Charlton.”
Dalot shared his sentiments, saying, “Today, we wanted to make a greater contribution. With this victory, we hoped to bring some joy on this somber day. This is how we could contribute and show our support to the Charlton family. We are one family at United.”
Ten Hag expressed the team’s deep emotions, stating, “Our thoughts are with Sir Bobby Charlton’s family, especially Lady Norma, his children, and grandchildren. His passing marks the loss of a legend and a titan, whose achievements were immense not only in England but throughout the world. Despite his numerous trophies and games, Sir Bobby remained humble, serving as an example to all of us.”
As a further gesture of remembrance, Manchester United also placed a wreath at the Trinity Statue at Old Trafford. They will have a book of condolence available for fans at their stadium on Sunday.
