Manchester United Secure €50m Onana Deal and Shift Focus to Højlund

Manchester United is shifting their focus towards signing the talented striker Rasmus Højlund, following their successful acquisition of goalkeeper André Onana from Internazionale. Onana is on the verge of undergoing a medical examination and signing a contract, after both clubs agreed on a fee of €50m (£42.9m), with an additional €5m in potential add-ons.

It is understood that Onana will be offered a five-year contract, with an option for an additional season. United is keen on expediting his visa application to ensure his inclusion in their upcoming tour to the United States. Their inaugural match is against Arsenal in New Jersey on Saturday.

Although United has not made an official bid for Højlund, they have engaged in discussions with Atalanta. However, Atalanta has displayed no interest in a deal involving a player exchange along with monetary compensation for the Danish international. Negotiations with Atalanta have been progressing slowly, and it is expected that United may be required to pay approximately €70m for the 20-year-old striker, who netted nine goals in Serie A last season following his transfer from Sturm Graz.

In addition to a goalkeeper and a center-forward, United’s manager, Erik ten Hag, also has a defensive midfielder on his wishlist. Sofyan Amrabat from Fiorentina is among the players being considered for the role. However, prioritizing the goalkeeper and center-forward positions takes precedence over signing a defensive midfielder. Furthermore, a potential signing in this position will only occur if either Fred or Donny van de Beek departs from the club. Fred has received interest from Premier League clubs such as Fulham, as well as from Galatasaray and Saudi Arabia.

Amrabat, who put on a strong display for Morocco in last year’s World Cup, is also being pursued by admirers in Spain. However, Fiorentina will demand a substantial fee for his transfer, and it remains uncertain whether the La Liga suitors possess the financial resources to complete the deal. West Ham has expressed a desire to stay informed about the situation, while other English clubs are also monitoring developments closely.

Once Onana’s signing is finalized, Manchester United will allow Dean Henderson to depart and will enter discussions with Nottingham Forest regarding a permanent transfer for the 26-year-old goalkeeper. Henderson spent last season on loan at the City Ground. Subsequently, United will seek a new backup goalkeeper and have identified Zion Suzuki from Japan’s Urawa Reds as a potential option.
