Police on Coney Island were confronted with a man accompanied by a wallaby.
A 22-year-old man was given a ticket by officers while walking along the famous Brooklyn boardwalk with a wallaby in his arms.
The New York City Police Department responded to a 911 call around 5 p.m. and approached the man.
“During a brief search, officers discovered the wallaby in possession of a 22-year-old male. The wallaby was safely taken and placed under the care of the Animal Care Centers of New York City. The male individual was issued a Criminal Court summons for Possession of a Wild Animal,” as stated by an NYPD spokesperson.
The identity of the individual was not disclosed by the police.
Wallabies, which are marsupials related to kangaroos, are typically found in Australia, according to National Geographic.
The possession of wild animals, including wallabies, is prohibited in New York City under the New York Health Code unless they are kept in a veterinary facility, zoo, laboratory, or other authorized animal exhibits.
The health code specifically bans all “marsupials, including, but not limited to, Tasmanian devil, dasyure, bandicoot, kangaroo, wallaby, opossum, wombat, koala bear, cuscus, numbat, and pygmy, sugar, and greater glider.”
