Man Undergoes Successful Surgery in Sri Lanka to Remove 1.7-Pound Kidney Stone

When 62-year-old Canistus Coonghe underwent surgery on June 1, little did he know that he would become a Guinness World Record holder. The retired Sri Lanka Army soldier made it into the record books when military surgeons successfully removed the world’s largest and heaviest kidney stone from his body. This grapefruit-sized stone measured about 5.26 inches in length, surpassing the size of Coonghe’s own kidney which was 4.6 inches long. The stone weighed a whopping 1.76 pounds, breaking the previous record for the heaviest kidney stone ever found.

Dr. Kugadas Sutharshan performed the surgery, known as open pyelolithotomy, by making an incision in Coonghe’s kidney’s pelvis. Despite the obstruction caused by the stone, Coonghe’s kidney was still functioning normally. However, his prostate was found to be enlarged, while his other organs were normal in size.

Coonghe is currently in the process of recovering from the surgery and is reported to be doing well. X-rays of the kidney stone before and after the surgery clearly show the significant size of the stone within Coonghe’s body.

This particular kidney stone exceeded the previous records. The largest kidney stone discovered before this one was a 5.11-inch growth removed from Vilas Ghuge of India in 2004. Meanwhile, the heaviest stone belonged to Wazir Muhammad from Pakistan, weighing 1.36 pounds, and was removed in 2008.

Kidney stones are typically formed when minerals and salts crystallize into hard deposits. They can be caused by chronic dehydration and certain medical conditions such as gout and inflammatory bowel disease. These stones often cause severe pain and can be eliminated through urination or require medical interventions such as shock wave therapy or surgery.
