Man Sentenced for Ramming Deputies’ Vehicles During Pursuit

A 54-year-old man who led law enforcement officers on a pursuit spanning two cities has been sentenced to nine months in jail and two years of felony probation. Ryan Kendall of Beaumont pleaded guilty to assault on a peace officer and evading arrest as part of a pretrial agreement with the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office. Two related charges were dropped in exchange for Kendall’s admission.

In a hearing at the Riverside Hall of Justice, Superior Court Judge Gary Polk approved the terms of the plea agreement and imposed the agreed-upon sentence.

On February 21, 2023, sheriff’s officials responded to reports of a motorist exhibiting strange behavior in Norco. Upon reaching the location, deputies attempted to make contact with Kendall, suspecting he might be under the influence of a controlled substance due to his erratic conduct. Kendall fled the scene, leading to a vehicle pursuit. Tire deflation devices were successfully deployed during the pursuit, eventually causing all four tires of Kendall’s vehicle to deflate.

The pursuit continued into Corona, where police officers employed an armored vehicle to perform a “precision immobilization technique” and force Kendall’s vehicle off the road. Following the immobilization, Kendall intentionally accelerated towards two sheriff’s vehicles, striking them before his vehicle was finally immobilized. Kendall was apprehended without further incident but suffered non-life-threatening injuries and had to undergo several weeks of recovery in the sheriff’s infirmary.

Fortunately, no law enforcement officers were injured during the incident. Kendall had no prior felony convictions in Riverside County.
