A man from Corona was sentenced to life in prison without parole after chasing down and ramming a car carrying six teenagers, causing a fatal crash. Anurag Chandra, 45, was convicted of multiple counts of murder and attempted murder, along with special circumstances and sentence-enhancing allegations. District Attorney Mike Hestrin commended Judge Valerie Navarro for imposing the maximum sentence.
During the sentencing hearing, Craig Hawkins, the father of one of the deceased teens, expressed the profound impact of the loss on their family. Chandra’s actions resulted in the deaths of Daniel Hawkins, Jacob Ivascu, and Drake Ruiz, all 16 years old. Three other occupants of the car, aged 13, 14, and 18, sustained injuries but have since recovered.
According to authorities, the incident occurred after the teenagers attempted a doorbell ditch prank in the neighborhood. Chandra pursued them in his vehicle until a collision occurred, ultimately leading to the fatal crash. There was no prior dispute between Chandra and the teens.
Witnesses followed Chandra to his residence and alerted the California Highway Patrol, leading to his arrest. Although Chandra had previous misdemeanor charges for battery and child endangerment, they did not impact his sentence.
