August 14 (UPI) — In a tale of luck and delayed discovery, a man from Utah recently found out he had won a whopping $3 million jackpot in the Mega Millions lottery a month after the drawing.
The winner, J. Refugio Gonzalez Almeida, is a regular lottery player who often makes trips to Malad in Idaho to purchase tickets. With the jackpot reaching around $400 million for the July 4 Mega Millions drawing, Almeida decided to make two trips to ensure he had enough chances to win.
When asked about his hobby, Almeida said, “Playing the Lottery is my passion. After I didn’t win the jackpot on Friday, I felt compelled to get a ticket for the 4th of July, so I drove back to Malad on Saturday. I made sure to buy tickets for all the games, including Mega Millions. I had a large number of tickets.”
However, it wasn’t until a month later that Almeida returned to Malad to check his tickets and discovered his enormous win. He recounted, “I checked a few tickets initially and they didn’t yield much, maybe $2 or $8. But then they scanned this specific ticket and notified me that I needed to take it to the Lottery Commission. And that’s how I found out.”
Almeida’s ticket matched the first five numbers, earning him a $1 million prize. However, luck was on his side as well, as the Megaplier number 3 was also drawn, multiplying his winnings to a grand total of $3 million.
With his newfound wealth, Almeida shared his plans, affirming, “I’m going straight to the bank to deposit this money. It’s a life-changing amount, and I want to make sure to invest it wisely.”
