A felon accused of brutally assaulting a man in Cabazon has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon and other offenses. The alleged assailant, Sergio Martinez Gutierrez, 44, was apprehended by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department after a thorough investigation.
Gutierrez faces charges of assault and a sentence-enhancing allegation for causing severe bodily harm and engaging in violent conduct that poses a significant threat to society.
The defendant is currently held at the Benoit Detention Center in Indio on a $1 million bail and was scheduled to appear in court at the Banning Justice Center.
The incident, as reported by Sheriff Sgt. David Greenwalt, took place during the early hours of July 27 in the vicinity of Bonita Avenue and Elm Street in Cabazon. Gutierrez allegedly engaged in an argument with the victim and proceeded to attack him using a large piece of wood as a weapon, followed by multiple stabbings.
Witnesses swiftly called 911 as the ex-con fled the scene. The victim was promptly taken to a trauma center in the Coachella Valley, where he received treatment for serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Detectives were able to identify Gutierrez as the assailant, leading to his arrest without incident on Tuesday in the same area where the assault occurred.
Court records reveal that Gutierrez has previous convictions for firearm assault, gang activity, and attempted grand theft.
