Man apprehended following deadly Long Beach collision reportedly instigated by SUV performing reckless maneuvers

A 20-year-old individual from Carson voluntarily surrendered to the police and was apprehended for allegedly causing a tragic collision while driving his SUV in circles at an intersection in Long Beach. The incident occurred at 10:57 p.m. on Friday at the intersection of Willow Street and Caspian Avenue, located to the west of the Los Angeles River, according to the Long Beach Police Department. A tragic consequence of this collision was the ejection and subsequent fatality of 21-year-old Jacqueline Zamarripa, who was a passenger in a pickup truck.

The truck, a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado, was traveling westbound on Willow Street at the time, while an SUV of light-colored silver or tan was engaged in circular movements within the intersection, as reported by the police.

The collision occurred when the SUV collided with the Chevrolet Silverado, causing the latter to lose control and collide with a tree in the middle of the road. Despite the efforts of the Long Beach Fire Department paramedics, Zamarripa could not be saved and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Preliminary investigations suggest that both speed and distracted driving played significant roles in the occurrence of the crash.

The driver of the Silverado, the 20-year-old Carson man, remained at the scene and fully cooperated with the ensuing investigation. Conversely, the driver of the SUV fled the scene before the officers arrived.

On the subsequent day, a suspect named Saul Alfas turned himself in at the Long Beach Police Headquarters and surrendered. Alfas was subsequently booked at the Long Beach City jail on charges of felony vehicular manslaughter and felony hit-and-run causing injury or death. A bail amount of $50,000 was set, and the case will be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for further consideration early in the upcoming week.

Any individual who may have witnessed the accident or possesses additional information about the suspect is urged to contact Detective Shawn Loughlin of the LBPD Collision Investigation unit at 562-570-7355 or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.
