A 24-year-old man, Zeus Rico of Desert Hot Springs, pleaded guilty to felony charges on Tuesday and was sentenced to 180 days in county jail and nearly three years of formal probation. Rico was charged with resisting an officer, eluding a pursuing officer, evading arrest, cruelty to an animal, and driving under the influence of a drug.
The incident occurred on July 15th around 3 a.m. when an officer attempted to stop Rico’s 2019 Honda Civic for running a red light. Rico refused to yield and led the officer on a high-speed pursuit from Cathedral City to Indio, crossing over into opposite lanes multiple times.
After the pursuit was canceled, Rico continued driving for another 3.5 miles before losing control of his vehicle and crashing into two gas pumps at the Sinclair Gas Station at the intersection of Indio Boulevard and Van Buren Street. The collision resulted in a fire that was later extinguished by the fire department.
Rico, who had a suspended license and a previous DUI arrest, was briefly hospitalized before being arrested. His dog, a husky, was uninjured and taken to a local animal shelter.
Rico is currently held at the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning.
