Malik Cunningham, from the Patriots, shines with promising performance during preseason debut as quarterback

Cunningham’s versatility should come as no surprise given his collegiate career as a quarterback at Louisville. However, in order to increase his chances of securing a spot on an NFL roster, he has been diligently practicing both quarterback and receiver positions with the New England team. His exceptional talent led the Patriots to score their only touchdown of the game, leaving fans with memorable highlights from the preseason opener.

New England boasts a strong quarterback lineup, with promising young talents like Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe, both of whom have experienced starting roles in their careers. Jones, expected to be the top option, sat out the Thursday night match while Zappe took the majority of the workload. In addition, four-year veteran Trace McSorley is also part of the roster but may face tough competition for a spot if Cunningham continues to display his potential during preseason games.

Cunningham, on the other hand, will continue honing his skills as a receiver and quarterback. Coach Bill Belichick is no stranger to utilizing receivers as passers, as demonstrated by his use of former Kent State quarterback and long-time Patriots receiver Julian Edelman, who occasionally threw passes during his 11-season tenure in New England.

“Is it challenging?” responded Cunningham when asked about juggling the responsibilities of two positions. “No, I believe I’m an intelligent and crafty individual, and the coaches have been phenomenal in explaining and breaking down the concepts for me. The quarterbacks, the receivers—everyone has been incredibly supportive and helpful, and I’m truly grateful for their assistance.”

If Cunningham secures a spot on the final 53-man roster, he could potentially fulfill a similar role as Edelman did. His promising start certainly sets a hopeful tone for his future.
