Located in the Venice neighborhood of Los Angeles, Maison Lune is not your typical art gallery. It appears to be a home, complete with a bed, kitchen, and even a bathtub. Sandrine Abessera and Lubov Azria, the owners, moved in early 2022 and immediately felt the need to share this unique space.
According to Ms. Azria, living in such a beautiful space without opening it up to others would be selfish. They wanted to reimagine the art-viewing experience by creating a gallery that isn’t just a blank box, but a place where visitors can sit and truly experience the artwork.
Every three months, Maison Lune showcases a new collection of works in its three-story home and gallery. The most recent exhibition featured paintings by Wes Aderhold, while the first show was a group exhibit curated by Gaia Jacquet-Matisse, the great-great-granddaughter of Henri Matisse. But it’s not just the artwork that is curated; every element in the space, including the houseplants, linens, and furniture, is thoughtfully selected.
The goal of Maison Lune is to bridge the gap between people and art. Visitors can not only purchase the artwork but also the decorative objects displayed. The space offers a full sensory experience, with the curator, Daniel Sierra Domínguez, comparing it to the French salon tradition, where art was discussed and critiqued in residential settings.
Maintaining a pristine living space that also serves as an art gallery is no easy feat, but the lack of young children and pets, as well as daily housekeeping, helps. The owners, Sandrine Abessera and Lubov Azria, who met while working together at BCBG, are no strangers to hosting. Their previous home, the famed Maison du Soleil, was known for its rollicking Shabbat dinners attended by friends and celebrities.
While Maison Lune is currently their primary residence, the owners envision expanding this concept to other cities like Paris, Miami, or New York. For now, their focus is on preserving and celebrating the bohemian spirit of Venice, an area that has been changing due to luxury developments and rising real estate prices.
Ultimately, Maison Lune aims to be a space where people from various fields can share their work and connect, reminiscent of the vibrant artistic community that once thrived in Venice.
