In July 2021, Ms. Arthur proposed to her partner, Mx. Cohen, at Daddy’s Plants, a charming plant shop located in Buffalo. It was a heartfelt moment as Mx. Cohen, going down on one knee, recited a poem they had written for Ms. Arthur, a poem that had been cherished in their wallet for months. To commemorate this beautiful gesture, the couple framed the poem and displayed it proudly in their Park Slope apartment, their new home since April 2022.
The wedding ceremony took place in front of two witnesses – Mx. Cohen’s mother, Tina Cohen, and Ms. Arthur’s father, Don Arthur – officiated by the city clerk, Madeline Plasencia. The entire elopement was planned and executed within a remarkable span of just seven days. Mx. Cohen expressed gratitude for their L.G.B.T.Q. community, who came together to help make their last-minute wedding possible. Notably, the contributions of Lucas Dean, Ms. Arthur’s talented makeup artist, and Miriam Bloom Designs, the florist, were instrumental in creating a truly memorable day.
Throughout their relationship, Mx. Cohen reflected that finding joy during challenging times has been a central theme. In March 2021, Ms. Arthur tragically lost her mother, and during this period, Mx. Cohen, who bravely opened up about their transgender identity a year into their relationship, faced considerable difficulty due to the prevailing anti-trans sentiments and legislative actions.
“Experiencing such a vibrant and radiant sky on the day we officially unite in marriage is nothing new for us,” Ms. Arthur shared, emphasizing the couple’s ability to derive happiness even amidst adversity.
To commemorate their wedding, the couple celebrated with a joyful dinner alongside five close friends at Brooklyn’s renowned restaurant, The Fly. Subsequently, they continued their festivities at Ginger’s Bar, a beloved lesbian establishment. While some friends were unable to attend due to concerns about the poor air quality, the couple remained undeterred that their ceremony coincided with a historically chaotic day.
“The care, compassion, and profound love we share can conquer any obstacle – even if the world around us is in turmoil – because we will always have each other,” expressed Mx. Cohen.
