Los Angeles Welcomes 11th Busload of Migrants from Texas

Los Angeles welcomed another bus carrying migrants from Texas on Wednesday, marking the 11th arrival since June 14th, as reported by the L.A. Welcomes Collective and the mayor’s office.

The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA), a member of the collective consisting of nonprofit organizations, faith groups, and government services, confirmed the arrival of the bus. This particular bus brought 35 asylum seekers from Guatemala, Honduras, Peru, Russia, and Venezuela. It arrived at approximately 10:50 a.m. and included 21 adults and 14 children between the ages of 2 and 17.

CHIRLA expressed gratitude towards the city of Los Angeles, county, and community partners for providing compassion, dignity, and respect to the asylum seekers. They acknowledged the support of the L.A. Welcomes Collective in helping these individuals begin their journey to settle in the community.

Mayor Karen Bass’s spokesperson, Zach Seidl, confirmed the latest arrival in a statement, explaining that the city has been actively working with various departments, county officials, nonprofit organizations, and faith partners to ensure a coordinated response since earlier this year.

According to the mayor’s office, a total of 435 migrants from Texas have been welcomed in the city since the first bus arrived at Union Station in June.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has been organizing these trips under Operation Lone Star, citing overwhelming immigration, drug trade, and human smuggling at the Texas-Mexico border. The operation is a joint effort between the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas Military Department.

Abbott proudly shared the achievements of the operation on X, revealing that as of August 26th, it has resulted in over 420,800 apprehensions, 33,600 criminal arrests, 30,500 felony charges, the seizure of 436 million fentanyl doses, and the transportation of 33,230 migrants to designated “Sanctuary Cities.”

Abbott emphasized the need for border security in President Biden’s absence, as Texas continues to provide relief to its overwhelmed border communities. He remarked on Los Angeles, a major city migrants seek to go to, especially since it declared itself a sanctuary city. He called on President Biden to fulfill his duty of securing the border.

Mayor Bass addressed Abbott’s concerns, stating that if they were genuine, the Texas government should notify and coordinate with Los Angeles. However, this has not been the case. The city is often only informed about buses when they are already en route, leaving them unaware of the number of people or their condition upon arrival.

In June, the Los Angeles City Council motioned to formally establish the city as a sanctuary city. Recently, the council called for an investigation by the City Attorney’s Office to determine if any crimes were committed during or before June 14th, when Abbott sent the first shipment of 42 migrants to Los Angeles.
