The Housing Department of Los Angeles recently announced that it has been awarded $156.9 million by the state to aid in the creation of 466 affordable housing units. This funding comes from the California Strategic Growth Council’s Affordable Housing and Sustainable Communities Program, and it marks the seventh consecutive year that proposals from the Housing Department have received funding from this program.
Mayor Karen Bass expressed gratitude to the state partners for providing this critical funding and highlighted the importance of these awards in delivering affordable housing throughout the city while improving community safety and accessibility. She also emphasized the city’s commitment to securing additional resources to further address the housing needs of its residents.
The funds provided through the Affordable Housing and Sustainable Communities Program will contribute over $99.2 million to the development of four affordable housing projects in downtown Los Angeles, Koreatown, Crenshaw, and Historic South Central. Specifically, these projects include the expansion of the Downtown Women’s Center Campus in Council District 14, the HHH New Hampshire project in Council District 10, the Crenshaw Crossing project in Council District 10, and the Peak Plaza Apartments in Council District 9.
The AHSC Program aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote sustainable transportation by supporting integrated affordable housing developments near essential facilities and improving transportation infrastructure. A portion of the funding will be allocated to building sidewalks, bike lanes, and bus shelters to encourage the use of walking, cycling, and public transportation methods.
In this latest round of funding, approximately $22.7 million will be used for infrastructure improvements and transit-related amenities. These improvements will focus on areas in need by implementing traffic-calming measures, such as speed humps and high-visibility crosswalks. Moreover, over 85,000 feet of roads will benefit from new bikeway infrastructure, and nearly 2,000 feet of sidewalks will be repaired. The funding will also contribute to the acquisition of new all-electric buses for the Metro, enhancing bus lines in proximity to the affordable housing projects.
Ann Sewill, the general manager of the Housing Department, expressed excitement about receiving these awards and outlined the benefits of the four developments. In addition to providing affordable housing units, these projects will incorporate bicycle and pedestrian improvements, energy efficiency measures, water conservation elements, and convenient access to high-quality transit options, creating a more sustainable and livable Los Angeles.
Over the years, the city has received a total of approximately $494.2 million from the AHSC Program, enabling the support of 39 housing developments and the creation of about 4,338 new housing units, with 4,024 of them being affordable housing options. This ongoing collaboration between the state and the city demonstrates their commitment to addressing the pressing issue of affordable housing in Los Angeles.
