MLB announced Wednesday afternoon that Giants ace Logan Webb finished in second place in the 2023 NL Cy Young voting. This marks the first time a Giants pitcher has reached the top three since right-handed pitcher Tim Lincecum won the award in 2009.
The award was claimed by San Diego Padres left-hander Blake Snell for the second time in his career, having already won it in the AL prior to this year. Snell received 28 first-place votes, while Webb earned one first-place vote and 17 second-place votes.
After pitching the second complete game of his career for the Giants in September, Webb confidently stated that Snell is “the best pitcher in baseball,” predicting his Cy Young win.
Even though Webb narrowly missed out on his first Cy Young Award, NBC Sports Bay Area’s Angelina Martin listed three reasons why Webb made a strong case for himself in 2023. She also celebrated Webb’s achievement as a finalist in the competition.
Webb boasted a 3.25 ERA across 33 starts, ranking fourth among all qualified NL pitchers. Additionally, he tallied a league-high 15 quality starts. Meanwhile, the third place was secured by Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Zac Gallen, and New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole won the AL Cy Young Award by unanimous decision.
